The nitrochlorobenzene plant produces both o-nitrochlorobenzene and p-nitrochlorobenzene as isomers. At the current level of technology in China, it is practically impossible to adjust the ratio of these isomers; the ratio between p-nitrochlorobenzene and o-nitrochlorobenzene is roughly 2:1. Additionally, a small amount of m-nitrochlorobenzene is also produced. Due to the relatively small production volume of o-nitrochlorobenzene, coupled with the rapid development of downstream products derived from it in recent years, from 2001 to the first quarter of 2005, the domestic market for o-nitrochlorobenzene saw strong demand and supply, resulting in stable prices that fluctuated around 9,000 yuan per ton. Since 2001, there has been a surplus supply of p-nitrochlorobenzene, leading to a continuous decline in its price. From 2001 to the beginning of 2004, the price of p-nitrochlorobenzene remained below 5,000 yuan per ton, while in 2002 it was below 3,000 yuan per ton throughout the year. In 2004, due to a sharp rise in the price of the raw material benzene, the price of p-nitrochlorobenzene began to rise only slowly. From the second half of 2004 to the beginning of 2005, p-nitrochlorobenzene reached unusually high prices. By the second quarter of 2005, there was a severe oversupply of both p-nitrochlorobenzene and o-nitrochlorobenzene, leading to a drop in their prices; by the end of 2005, these prices had reached their lowest levels. From January to May 2006, prices remained low, with significant resistance to any upward movement in prices. Despite low prices, the production capacity of downstream products was expanding rapidly; as a result, in 2005 the major manufacturers maintained an average operating rate of around 82%, with production reaching 382 kt/a. Many of these downstream products are reduced using iron powder, alkaline sulfide, or hydrazine hydrate; few are produced through catalytic hydrogenation. In recent years, numerous facilities for processing nitrochlorobenzene have had to close down because of the severe environmental damage they cause ; Fifthly, the raw material pathways for some products have changed. For example, p-aminodiphenylamine is one of the main downstream products of p-nitrochlorobenzene. With the successful development in China of cleaner processes for synthesizing p-aminodiphenylamine using *** as a substitute for p-nitrochlorobenzene as a raw material, the major manufacturers of p-aminodiphenylamine have accelerated the development and application of these technologies. As a result, the pathway using p-nitrochlorobenzene is gradually being phased out, and its consumption in the field of rubber additives will decrease significantly ; In addition, many products synthesized from p- and o-nitrochlorobenzene now use o-dichlorobenzene as the starting material. From January to May 2006, although the main manufacturers of chlorobenzene and nitrochlorobenzene maintained high production rates, prices had dropped to their lowest levels. These companies suffered losses on nitrochlorobenzene production, the economic efficiency of their facilities was poor, and some products accumulated as excess stock.
