As the title suggests, I would like to ask everyone: does a calcium chloride salt water tank (made of ordinary steel plates) require anti-corrosion treatment inside? No theoretical analysis or reference materials for material selection – I’m hoping for answers from sailors who have used it in practice? If preservation is necessary, then discuss how to do it; otherwise, talk about the actual usage situation.
The chemical plant where I used to work had calcium chloride refrigeration salt water tanks, which were usually made of 8 or 10 iron plates coated with anti-rust paint. Due to the strong corrosive nature of saltwater, the anti-rust paint only provided protection for about half a year before the iron plates began to corrode gradually; 10 layers of iron plate could last around 5 years. Adding a corrosion inhibitor to saltwater (it seems to be some kind of chromium-containing compound; I can’t remember exactly) can reduce the degree of corrosion, but since this preservative is toxic, our company does not use it; instead, we opt for thicker iron plates. It is certain that it will last for some time, but the exact duration is not clear. Based on information from the workers who carry out the actual work, a conservative estimate is three months.
A simple method is to use epoxy resin to apply a layer of corrosion protection on the carbon steel tank; apply several layers if desired. As long as there is no human-induced damage, there should be no problems
