Some of China’s coal chemical industry technologies and achievements; some new technologies in China’s coal chemical sector. Research projects and R&D institutions, as well as the progress made and its significance. Coal gasification: The project for producing syngas through pressurized gasification of pulverized coal was carried out by East China University of Science and Technology, Yankuang Group’s Yankuang Lunan Fertilizer Factory, and China Tianchen Chemical Company. A pilot plant with a coal feeding rate of 30 tons per day was built; after operational testing, the results filled a gap in China’s capabilities, with the process parameters reaching international leading levels. Ash fusion fluidized bed gasification technology: An industrial demonstration of this technology was completed by the Shanxi Institute of Coal Chemistry under the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2002. Direct coal liquefaction: China’s first pilot plant for direct coal liquefaction with a capacity of 6 tons per day was put into operation in December 2004 by Shenhua Group’s Coal-to-Oil Research Center, Shanghai Electric Group, and Shanghai Huayi Group. This successful operation established the entire liquefaction process, enabling the production of coal-derived products such as naphtha and diesel. The success of this project marks that our country has overcome the core technologies related to coal-to-oil conversion, taking a crucial step forward in the industrialization of coal liquefaction technology. The Institute of Coal Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, conducted long-term test operations on a pilot plant for coal indirect liquefaction using a low-temperature slurry bed process to produce synthetic oil; high-quality diesel products were obtained, and the development of catalysts for this system, as well as the design of process software packages and engineering studies for a demonstration factory, were completed.
