The treatment of aquaculture wastewater generally involves anaerobic biogas production + aerobic treatment + oxidation pond treatment. Treating wastewater from livestock farming is quite challenging, mainly due to the high levels of nitrogen, COD, and SS. Among these, wastewater from pig farming is the most difficult to treat. Meeting first-class discharge standards requires high treatment costs; therefore, in many places, wastewater from livestock farming is only required to meet second-class standards.
The main issue is the high ammonia nitrogen level; the other factors are not a problem. Generally, the process used is UASB + contact oxidation, or hydrolysis acidification + contact oxidation

SS is also a significant problem in aquaculture wastewater; plant-based SS does not settle easily, air flotation requires high energy consumption, and the collected sludge emits a strong odor. Additionally, there are many toxic substances present, which increases the difficulty of adjusting the treatment process.
Treating nitrogen and ammonia is rather difficult; for large-scale operations, specialized treatment equipment is required, while for smaller scales, natural treatment methods are sufficient, and the resulting substance can be used as fertilizer. .
