The effective water depth of a pool refers to the distance from the horizontal level at the bottom of the pool to the maximum height of the water at the top of the pool. The total height of the pool includes the effective water depth of the pool + the protection height of the pool + the height of the silt trap of the pool + the buffer height of the pool. It is easiest to see with a diagram.

It’s not convenient to draw diagrams here; the buffer height refers to the difference between the effective water depth and the depth of the sediment chamber. This value can be found in design manuals, such as the chapter on sedimentation tanks in the Quick Design Manual for Water Supply and Drainage.
The effective water depth is related to the hydraulic load and settling time of the cross-flow sedimentation tank; a higher designed hydraulic load results in a correspondingly larger effective water depth.
