Our company transports a type of material that is highly corrosive and volatile; it is stored in barrels. We now need a suitable pump for transporting this material. One company has offered WILDEN barrel pumps (pneumatic pumps), but the issue is that once the pump has pumped out all the material, will the barrel get flattened as well? ? We are quite concerned about this issue.
If the tank is sealed and there is a concern that it might be deflated, 10–20 liters of liquid can be left inside the tank; since this material is volatile, the pressure inside the tank will not drop too low. Of course, it is best to fill the barrel with an inert gas to prevent a large negative pressure from forming and causing the barrel to collapse.
For pumping material from 200-liter containers, a pneumatic diaphragm pump is a reasonable choice. Even if the material is volatile, it is necessary to leave some gas inside the container; it cannot be completely sealed. In other words, the storage tank needs to have a vent pipe, and volatile oil tanks need to have breather valves – these allow air to be expelled when material is being fed in order to prevent overpressure, and air to be drawn in when material is being discharged in order to avoid underpressure. Therefore, if the 200-liter container is completely sealed while pumping, it will definitely experience underpressure. Even in the case of leaving 20 liters of material as mentioned earlier, a complete seal would result in a vacuum level of -0.09 Mpa, and such a vacuum level is certainly beyond what the container can withstand Therefore, in order to empty the contents of the tank without causing suction issues, the tank must either be left open or properly inflated with air, so that during the process of extracting the material, the pressure inside the tank does not become too high or too low.
