The liquid sulfur produced by sulfur recovery units contains hydrogen sulfide at levels of several hundred PPM. To ensure safety and environmental protection during the shaping process of liquid sulfur, many facilities install degassing units for it. If foreign-based degassing technologies are used, the patent fees can range from hundreds of thousands of dollars; after degassing, the hydrogen sulfide content in the liquid sulfur drops to around 10 PPM. The challenge lies in determining the hydrogen sulfide content in liquid sulfur with accuracy.
It’s difficult to measure, and accurate determination is even harder. I think it’s difficult under normal conditions; I’m considering using it in the laboratory as a possibility. Nitrogen is used for stripping, and the basic hydrogen peroxide absorbs it and converts it into sulfate ions (SO42-); the content of sulfate ions (SO42-) is determined by ion chromatography, thereby indirectly obtaining the content of H2S.

There are now online testing analyzers available, but they are very expensive. It can also be detected through ordinary laboratory analysis, but the challenge lies in transporting liquid sulfur from the site to the laboratory. Our company’s current approach is to take samples from the liquid sulfur tank, solidify them, send them to the laboratory, where they are melted back into liquid sulfur, and then the H2S content in it is analyzed. Obviously, this method is definitely inaccurate.
