I think listening more and speaking more is the key. It’s fine to listen to VOA and BBC to improve your listening skills and develop a sense for language. Even if you buy a tape, just repeat after it. If the people around you aren’t very interested in English, you can find places like English corners, where there are people who are interested in English ； If you have the opportunity to befriend veteran diplomats, be sure not to miss the chance to practice*. Language is meant to be spoken – speak out boldly! Those who are truly willing to learn* won’t be bothered by the external environment. Good luck!

I strongly disagree with the owner’s view. Nowadays, there are very few people in society who look down on learning foreign languages. Foreign languages, especially English, play an increasingly important role in our work and daily lives; many technical documents and tasks require a foundation in English and proficiency in it. If you want to learn something, go ahead and learn it boldly; don’t worry about what others think. As long as you believe it’s the right thing to do and see it as a worthwhile goal, then go ahead and practice it without hesitation. Learning English is a long-term process, and there are many ways to help one learn it well in an environment where the native language plays a dominant role.
To practice speaking a foreign language in one’s native language environment, it is necessary to listen to authentic spoken language frequently, and to participate in activities aimed at improving speaking skills such as English corners or English speaking weeks. In my current company, there are many French people who also speak English. I really like English, but I’ve always lacked confidence and been too afraid to speak it.
