The successful commissioning of this demonstration project has made China the only country in the world to master the key technologies for coal direct liquefaction on a million-ton scale. This represents a milestone achievement in China’s coal-to-oil technology, and it holds great significance for strengthening the country’s economic strength, innovation capabilities, and energy self-sufficiency, as well as for pursuing a path to clean energy with Chinese characteristics. The core unit utilizes the world’s most advanced coal direct liquefaction technology as well as highly efficient iron-based synthesis catalyst technology, providing strong technical support for Shenhua’s million-ton-scale demonstration project for coal direct liquefaction. Construction of this project officially began in May 2005, and through the relentless efforts and hard work of tens of thousands of engineering designers, project managers, and construction workers, the main structure was mechanically completed by the end of 2007. At 14:46 on December 30, 2008, the demonstration project began coal feeding trials; at 7:00 on December 31, the process of the direct coal liquefaction unit was operational, and coal liquefied products were produced, with the residue being successfully shaped ； At 14:30 on December 31, all production processes were activated, and the target products such as qualified naphtha and diesel were produced. Cao Xianghong, head of the expert group of the State Council’s Coordination and Guidance Team for the Shenhua Coal Direct Liquefaction Demonstration Project, and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said after witnessing the successful commissioning of the demonstration project: “This project was prepared carefully, organized meticulously, directed properly, and operated with precision, enabling a successful start-up with coal input from the very first attempt.
