If you want to produce methanol from coal, you should first learn about coal gasification – it’s the foundation!
The main component of coal is carbon. Methanol is produced by converting coal into water gas (hydrogen and carbon monoxide) in the presence of steam; there is also a small amount of carbon dioxide. This mixture passes through a reactor containing coke powder, where carbon dioxide reacts with the coke to produce more carbon monoxide. Finally, carbon monoxide and hydrogen combine, under the action of a catalyst, to form methanol. Of course, there are many processing steps and refinements involved in this process
