Since I am working on my graduation project, which involves the design of an absorption tower for long-tail gases in ammonia synthesis, I am asking here for information regarding the current status and future prospects of packed-bed absorption towers. Packed towers are very commonly used in the chemical industry; the main difference lies in the type of packing used. The future for them is certainly bright, as there is no evidence yet of any alternative that could replace packed towers
With the development of the petrochemical industry, packed towers have received increasing attention. Over the subsequent 20-plus years, significant progress has been made in packed tower technology, with the emergence of many efficient packing materials and new types of internal components for these towers. In particular, the continuous development and application of new, efficient, and structured packing materials have challenged the dominance of plate towers in distillation equipment, and there is a clear trend toward these new packing materials replacing plate towers. The maximum diameter of structured packed columns has reached 14–20 meters, putting an end to the history in which packed columns were only suitable for columns with small diameters
Currently, the absorption towers used are mainly packed towers; plate towers can also be used as absorption towers, but they result in a higher pressure drop. For example, bubble towers have a larger clear liquid layer between their trays. Secondly, spray towers have been gradually introduced over the past two years; these towers have a relatively small diameter, and their absorption efficiency is said to be fairly good. However, it is not used in many industries at present.
The packed tower is the most widely used and longest-established industrial device in gas absorption. Since the 1960s, continuous improvements to random-packed materials and the development and application of new structured packing materials, particularly innovations in gas-liquid distribution devices, have completely changed the long-held notion that packed towers were only suitable for small tower diameters.
