Treatment of magnesium tailwater by the nitromagnesium method

In the nitromagnesium process for the production of concentrated nitric acid, the magnesium-containing wastewater, with a low concentration of around 5% and a large volume of approximately 0.74 tons per ton of 100% nitric acid, has long represented a challenge for the industry. The common treatment methods currently in use are: 1) using dynamic anion exchange resins instead of dilute hydrochloric acid; 2) using this wastewater as water for absorption purposes (however, due to the presence of magnesium ions, it may cause damage to the four-in-one units, so we have not adopted this method). We suggest that everyone discuss whether there are any other treatment options available.
At present, concentration without energy consumption is achievable; 30% of the nitric acid can be recovered and then re-concentrated, while the magnesium-containing wastewater has a concentration of less than 0.1%, allowing it to be discharged after simple treatment.

I can’t go into details; it involves issues of technical leakage. Simply put, it involves making full use of the heat from the gas exiting the magnesium nitrate evaporator.
