Since our company is a process-oriented enterprise with thousands of various pumps, we have some mechanical seals in stock. I wonder what is a reasonable storage period for these mechanical seals? Does prolonged storage affect the performance of the mechanical seal?
In accordance with JB/T4127.3-1999, after product acceptance, it should be stored in a well-ventilated and light-proof room at a temperature not lower than -15 degrees and not higher than 40 degrees, with a storage period of one year.
In my opinion, the key to the storage duration of mechanical seals lies in the storage period of the rubber O-rings and other components used alongside them. As for whether the stationary and rotating rings should be placed in a suitable environment, it doesn’t make much of a difference. At that time, it will be sufficient to replace it with a brand new O-ring.
In this regard, the requirement per national standards is 1 year, but these standards are too low; manufacturers with reliable quality can easily meet this requirement for 1 year without any issues. When stored in a sealed condition in a normal environment, it can last for 3 years; however, it is advisable to inspect it before use. The key parts to check are the spring (to see if it has lost its elasticity) and the auxiliary sealing O-rings (to check if they are deformed or have lost their elasticity, especially those at the compensation ring area). A hydrostatic test should also be conducted, and only if it passes can the item be used.
