Currently, there is considerable controversy regarding the construction of refineries and chemical plants along the Yangtze River and in its upper and middle reaches, as the oil refining and chemical industries can boost the economy and water transportation is cost-effective. However, once an accident occurs, the area affected by pollution is large and difficult to control, and the treated wastewater is discharged into the Yangtze River.
