I would like to ask why paperless recorders need to be installed in these facilities. Also, in atmospheric and vacuum distillation units, at which locations or on which instruments should recorders be installed? Paperless recorders are great; doesn’t that mean there’s no need to take readings manually? Could an expert explain this?
Isn’t it available in DCS? If it is thought that the time period is not long enough, data can be collected using a computer; operation data can be stored for years or even decades, as long as the hard drive has sufficient capacity!
I mean, generally, those locations need to be set up – it’s not like all locations have to be configured, right?
No recording paper is used anymore. When using a paperless recorder, it is necessary to back up data regularly.
DCS can definitely do it; there’s no need to do it multiple times at once. I was involved in the configuration of the DCS for our atmospheric and vacuum distillation unit; all data is backed up, with the frequency of retrieval varying depending on the importance of the data – some are retrieved more frequently while others less often. Today, computer hard drives have very large capacities, allowing you to store data for several years. The design principle I followed at that time was to create curves for all process parameters and control valve positions; important data were read every 1 second, while less critical data were read every 10 seconds, with all data being stored for one year. Every hour, all data is automatically compiled into an electronic ledger for technical analysis and long-term archiving, resulting in 24 sets of data being archived each day.
If it is a DCS, it already has this function; in the case of conventional instruments, some of the important parameters can be switched to paperless recorders as needed, allowing for real-time access to historical data. This eliminates the hassle associated with changing paper or making markings. Such instruments serve only for display and recording purposes, while actual control is carried out by other control instruments.
