I have just come into contact with busbars and have gained a basic understanding of them; I would like to learn more about them in depth. I hope that experienced experts can share some practical insights from their experience in operation!
I work in the field of small power plants, so I have some knowledge about busbars. However, what I see most often are bare busbars; in some cases, a special enclosure is added around these bare busbars, and that’s what constitutes a busbar tray. To be precise, it should be called a busbar tray system, as it is made up of various components such as steel plates and elbows, and it needs to have good mechanical strength and heat dissipation properties. It is mainly used in three-phase four-wire power supply and distribution systems with a frequency of 50Hz, a rated voltage of 380V, and a rated current of 250A–4000A. It also serves to prevent people from accidentally touching the busbars, providing good protection for them as well. Busway systems are mainly made of steel, aluminum, or aluminum alloys, and there are many different types such as air-type, dense-type, and enclosed-type. The most common type is the enclosed type, but since I have been working on small power plants, it’s rare for clients to request busbars; usually, bare busbars are used, with just a layer of anti-corrosion material applied to them.
The specifications for busbars are given in terms of amperage, which is different from the way cables were specified based on their cross-sectional area. This makes it more difficult for us to conduct inspections; therefore, I think this specification setup is not good, as it gives suppliers an opportunity to cheat!
