Recently, a team of experts conducted an inspection of our company’s identification and assessment of environmental factors, identifying one non-compliance issue. They argued that emissions of water, steam, noise, and waste, as well as energy consumption, all constitute major environmental factors (that is, those required by laws and regulations are considered major environmental factors). However, we determined major environmental factors using a scoring system; as a result, some wastewater and exhaust gases that can be discharged in compliance with standards were not included in the list of major environmental factors. According to the experts’ opinion, our company has too many major environmental factors. They also suggested that the list of major environmental factors could be further classified into those that are particularly significant and those that are generally significant, with management plans being developed for the particularly significant ones. I’m not sure if I made myself clear; I hope experienced colleagues can discuss this – how does your company identify significant environmental factors? ? ?

The key issue with ISO14001 certification is that your procedure documents need to be properly prepared. For example, a scoring method can be used as the primary approach; after scoring, additional items corresponding to legal and regulatory requirements can be added to specify procedures for identification and evaluation, thereby compensating for the shortcomings of the scoring method. The Guidelines for Risk Assessment in Environmental Impact Assessment state that any functional unit that produces, processes, transports, uses, or stores hazardous substances in quantities equal to or exceeding the critical level is designated as a major hazard source.
