What precautions should be taken when transporting fluids containing solid particles?
If there are many particles, a semi-open or open impeller should be chosen. Overcurrent components should be made of wear-resistant materials. For the flushing scheme, external flushing should be chosen.
Particles in the fluid can block and wear the sealing surfaces, leading to an increase in temperature; generally, the PLAN32 external flushing scheme is chosen. Colleagues need to consider the size of particles in the fluid and the properties of the fluid.
When there are many solid particles, the following points should generally be taken into account: 1. The wear resistance of the conveying equipment; 2. The separation effect of conveying equipment: for example, if the speed of the pump impeller is too high, solid particles will be centrifugally separated and accumulate as dry material within the pump chamber, leading to blockages ; 3. The settlement effect of conveying equipment: too slow flow rates can lead to the settlement of solids, causing blockages ; 4. Solid flocculation: In the case of a suspension, it is necessary to consider whether the solids may flocculate due to prolonged transportation time, thereby causing blockages ; It is recommended that the poster analyze the solid content and the size of the solid particles, and then use Stokes’ law to determine whether sedimentation and separation will occur. If such effects are not significant, and the Reynolds number is high, then there will be no problem and normal transportation is possible. The materials of the stationary and rotating rings in mechanical seals also need to be considered

For sealing friction pairs, a direct contact design is recommended; if the medium being transported is at high temperature, an oil injection sealing method is advised. 3. It is recommended to use wear-resistant materials for the pump’s construction.
Attention must be paid to the maintenance of the transfer pump; it cannot be operated carelessly. After shutting down the pump, it is necessary to drain any remaining fluid from it. It is advisable to have taps on all the pipes connected to the pump, so that they can be purged easily and to prevent the medium from accumulating and blocking the pipes.
The impeller should be of open or semi-closed type. The open type is suitable for transporting materials with large suspended solids ; Semi-closed type is suitable for transporting materials that tend to settle or contain particles. We need to look at the physical properties of the particles contained within. Another consideration is wear resistance. Finally, it depends on what type of sealing you use. For mechanical seals, the clearance between the rotating and stationary rings as well as the diameter of the flushing holes also need to be considered.
