Top-mounted valves allow for maintenance of the internal components without having to remove the valve body from the pipeline; however, it is necessary to shut off the pipeline or divert it to a bypass. This is possible for many valves when only the packing needs to be replaced, though not as easily as with gate valves due to the presence of an upper seal. Only a bypass should be designed in the process flow design. It is impossible to remove any valve without interrupting flow, unless there is a bypass.
