I don’t understand; why not represent esters directly with their carbon count?
The patent describes the synthesis of higher esters (compared to ethyl acetate). For clarification: the general formula for esters is RCOOR’. By \"higher esters\", it is meant those in which the number of carbon atoms in R’ is greater than that in the corresponding compound; for ethyl acetate, R’ has 2 carbon atoms, so higher esters refer to those with 3 or more carbon atoms.
