While I was in charge of inspecting and disassembling some flanges in the workshop, I found that some gaskets needed to be replaced. It is a type of metal wound gasket, but it’s not clear which specific type of metal wound gasket it is; the key issue is that it’s not known whether the filler material in its inner and outer rings is graphite or asbestos. Its color is black; is it graphite? What is the main component of graphite? Is it corrosion-resistant?
This is mainly provided by the manufacturers; whenever we need metal gaskets, the relevant manufacturers will supply the gaskets made from the appropriate materials. Whether it’s graphite or asbestos depends on the manufacturer’s reputation, and these gaskets need to be replaced regularly

It should be graphite; that’s usually the case.
Black represents the flexible graphite metal-wound gasket; it has excellent corrosion resistance. Graphite is used in these gaskets due to its good fluidity. . . . . .
Based on experience, it’s generally possible to figure it out; if not, one can check the drawings from that year if they are available
There should be a standard number on it, with a mark. A check will show that it’s the upper dot that is off; graphite is a material with extremely high corrosion resistance
It depends on what kind of equipment or pipeline it is; do not make assumptions arbitrarily. It is best to consult the archives or design drawings. The selection of gaskets is related to pressure, temperature, and the type of medium used, and choosing the wrong one can have serious consequences.
