A Venturi scrubber is a type of hydraulic dust collector. It is mainly composed of a venturi tube (with three parts: a converging section, a throat, and an expanding section) and a cyclone separator. The dust-containing gas enters the converging tube, and its flow velocity increases gradually along the tube. Water or other liquids are sprayed in through the throat, where they are atomized by the high-speed airflow. Dust particles in the gas come into contact with liquid droplets and are lubricated. Upon entering the expansion tube, the flow velocity gradually decreases, and the dust particles stick together, causing the particles to grow larger and thus become easier to remove. Finally, it enters the cyclone separator; due to centrifugal force, the water and lubricated dust particles are thrown against the inner wall of the separator and flow downward out of it, while the purified gas is discharged through the central tube of the separator. Its advantages are a simple structure and high dust removal efficiency. The disadvantage is high resistance, and it cannot be used to purify gases that must not come into contact with liquids. In addition to removing dust, it also has a cooling effect. Used for dust removal in tobacco smoke, etc.

The main function of the scrubber is to remove the ash present in the humidified syngas; once it enters the carbon scrubbing tower, this ash settles easily, thereby reducing the ash content in the syngas to the desired level. During normal operation, the liquid levels in the quench chamber and the carbon scrubbing tower are kept stable, and the amount of water added to the trays is appropriate; therefore, the Venturi tube serves little purpose and can be completely removed.

If it is removed, one must ensure proper liquid levels in the washing tower as well as an adequate supply of water to the upper and lower trays. Moreover, the water quality must be good, otherwise it can have a fatal impact on the system’s performance. The pressure difference in such a case can increase significantly within a few days. Personally, I think it shouldn’t be canceled; its main function is to remove dust, and it also helps to lower temperatures. Is there still high-pressure washing water in the syngas exiting the gasifier? The effect is the same in all cases.
