Can ultrasonic testing be used for austenitic stainless steel welds? Why?
UT testing is not suitable for welding joints of austenitic stainless steel; RT is recommended instead.
The grain structure of the welded joints in austenitic stainless steel is relatively coarse, resulting in inaccurate UT test results.
In actual installation, those without UT testing are all RT
Try to avoid using ultrasound, as it is sensitive to linear and layered defects; ultrasound is more advantageous for thick plates, and stainless steel rarely comes in thick forms. Radiography is particularly sensitive to circular and punctate defects; it is not as sensitive to linear defects as ultrasound, but the images produced by radiography are clearer.
Ultrasonic testing cannot be used on welds of austenitic stainless steel, as factors such as twin grain boundaries in austenitic stainless steel significantly affect the attenuation and propagation of ultrasonic waves; however, austenitic stainless steel plates, forgings, etc. can still be inspected using ultrasonic testing.
Then, can UT testing be used for the butt joints of carbon steel and stainless steel? Please explain why (Premise: This connector cannot be tested using RT.)
