Currently, the water treatment systems in various companies are operating at full capacity; sometimes even minor fluctuations in production can cause problems, leading to environmental issues
This is a very sensitive issue; it’s not something you or I can control
Many are design issues; many possible scenarios were not taken into account. The design philosophy of the former Soviet Union remains applicable in terms of environmental protection measures; designs related to environmental protection should be conservative, while it is also necessary to have technology that is slightly ahead of its time. After all, more and more attention is being paid to environmental protection!
Problems arise as soon as there’s a fluctuation in production? Problems with environmental protection? Production fluctuations are common, and when designing the water treatment department, measures for dealing with such fluctuations should have been considered from the outset.
This is just one reason; another reason is that the companies themselves do not place importance on environmental protection and are reluctant to make investments in it. Furthermore, most of the personnel working in water treatment or environmental protection roles are those who were not needed in other main production positions and have been assigned to these environmental protection tasks, which results in the improper operation of environmental protection facilities.
The solutions to such situations are as follows: 1. Strengthen management to reduce leaks and losses; 2. Install collection tanks at the source points in the workshop, or what can be called emergency tanks for source-point incidents. These tanks allow for treatment and collection at the source point when there are fluctuations in production, thereby preventing impacts on the larger biochemical treatment system
I have prepared feasibility studies for two sewage treatment plants, both for the first phase; I don’t know when they will approach me for the second phase, and I have never done feasibility studies or environmental impact assessments for the second phase of sewage treatment plants. If it is a normal fluctuation, the designers would have taken into account impact loads when designing it in the first place; If it is due to expanded production, then it will definitely exceed the original design, which requires the addition of corresponding treatment facilities.
The accident ponds must be dug where necessary, and the accident tanks must be installed where required – there are no shortcuts. Those who discharge waste improperly in production must be punished.
It’s not just the wastewater treatment systems in companies; urban wastewater treatment plants face the same problem. The volume of wastewater keeps increasing rapidly, and treatment capacity can never keep up. By the time expansions are completed, the capacity is still insufficient, and this cycle repeats itself

It is acceptable for the treatment system to operate at full capacity, but the regulating tank will not get full; its capacity is designed to be large enough so that fluctuations in the quality of the incoming water do not cause disruptions in the biological treatment system. This is a flaw in the design. If the retention tank is insufficient, it’s not too late to take corrective action – simply increase the capacity of the retention tank.
