How to determine open circuits and short circuits in thermocouples and thermal resistors?
If the thermocouple is open-circuited, the maximum value will be displayed; instruments with an open-circuit alarm will issue such an alarm, while in the case of a short circuit, the room temperature at the point of the short circuit will be shown.
Thermal couple sensors have two wires; one can use a multimeter to check for continuity. If there is a short circuit, the ambient temperature at the point of the short circuit will be displayed. Thermal resistors usually have three wires, with BC being one of them – this arrangement is used to compensate for wire resistance. Therefore, in a normal thermal resistor, the resistance values between AB and AC should be identical. The wire that is not functioning properly is the one that is broken, which makes it easy to determine.
