The meaning of some equipment codes in the SHELL gasification process

In the coal-to-hydrogen plant at my workplace, different equipment is identified by letters at the beginning of their designations; for example, V in V1304 indicates a vessel, E in E1303 denotes a heat exchanger. Additionally, P before P1704 means pump, and K1301 refers to a compressor. There are many more such designations, some of which I’m not familiar with or might have gotten wrong – let’s all discuss this. Specifically, they include: V, E, K, P, C, J, S, A, K, X, T, D, R, etc.
It’s on the drawings; go and read the previous drawings carefully
V is the container, E is the heat exchanger, K is the compressor, P is the pump, C is the tower, J is the ejector or venturi scrubber, S is the separator, A is the coal grinder, X is the conveying equipment, T is the tank, D is the drum, R is the reactor

K is not necessarily just a compressor; it can also refer to units such as fans. D is not solely a drum either – some of the devices I’ve come across also refer to containers, storage tanks, and similar things.
The codes for different design institutes vary to some extent, but the instructions will make it clear
The letters at the beginning are abbreviations of English words!
Each design institute has its own set of codes, which should be indicated on the drawings

Generally, you can understand it by looking at the legend on the first page of the PID diagram! The letter P mentioned above refers to pumping equipment, C refers to tower equipment, and R refers to reactors!
