According to the China Chemical Industry News, large companies such as CNPC and Sinopec hold operational skills competitions once a year; it’s just not clear how these competitions are carried out, or in what form they take place. Currently, the Chemical Industry Association, together with national secondary and higher vocational schools, organizes the \"National Chemical Process Control Technician Skills Competition.\" This competition consists of three parts: a written test, a simulation test, and a practical test. The written test covers principles of chemical engineering; the simulation test involves using classic unit operations such as distillation, absorption/desorption, drying, and heat transfer to assess the procedures for starting up and shutting down processes, as well as the ability to respond to accidents. The practical test includes process-level chemical simulations (in which entire production processes are tested, such as ammonia production or fertilizer production). The practical part is divided into two sections: one focuses on classic unit operations (distillation has been the subject of all four editions of this competition), requiring participants to carry out full reflux and partial reflux operations within a specified time, with attention paid to product purity and yield； The other part involves the disassembly and assembly of pipelines (receiving components according to the procedure, then assembling them and conducting leak and pressure tests). Now, the Shanghai Labor Bureau has adopted this set of guidelines as the standard for skill assessment in Shanghai, with the training facility located at the Shanghai Petrochemical Industry School

I think practical operation competitions can be held by scoring based on the quality of the actual process execution; this way, it becomes a competition focused on the level of care put into the work, which is beneficial for production. In fact, the level of skill is not evident in a stable state of production; it is only under abnormal conditions that it can be tested to determine whether it is genuine. The ability to handle accidents can only be developed through regular accident training and the study of accident cases.

A problem that is difficult to solve is that, for roles other than general-purpose ones, it’s unlikely to use specialized equipment in competitions; it’s also hard to simulate emergency response capabilities under accident conditions, making it difficult to identify true experts.
