What’s been said makes sense; one more point to add: it can reduce the expansion pressure during coking… preventing damage to the furnace walls caused by an overly rich blend of coals.
Thinning agents are actually components with a high degree of coalification, such as lean coal, anthracite, or coke dust; they form the pore walls of coke during the coking process, thereby enhancing the strength of the coke after reaction! :)
The addition of retarding agents during the coking process helps to reduce the shrinkage of semi-coke, improve the size of the coke, and enhance its mechanical strength. Reduce the consumption of washed coking coal and lower the cost of metallurgical coke.
