Is Shell’s technology the most advanced in the world today? Not long ago I went to Liuzhou Chemical Industry Group Company for a visit; their ammonia synthesis unit uses Shell gas, but unfortunately the factory wouldn’t allow us to have access to it. We could only learn about the older process, the one that uses burners in gas furnaces. So I’d like everyone to discuss Shell’s technologies so that I can learn something too~~~
Shell gasification technology is an advanced gasification method developed by the Dutch company Shell. It uses pure oxygen and steam for gasification, dry powder as the feed material, with a gasification temperature of 1400–1700°C. The carbon conversion rate is 99%, and the yield of useful gases (CO+H2) is over 90%. Liquid slag is produced, and a special water-cooled wall gasifier is used, ensuring a long service life. By using the waste boiler process, high-pressure steam can be produced as a by-product. Dry powder gasification results in lower oxygen consumption, but requires nitrogen sealing, and the gasification pressure cannot be too high ; The gasifier (with waste boiler) has a complex and large structure ; Both equipment costs and patent fees are relatively high.
Shell’s technology seems to be quite energy-efficient. I saw a pretty interesting slogan in the factory: half a ton of steam equals 500 kWh of electricity – enough for use for half a year! Save one ton of water, produce one ton more of fertilizer! One coal stick, one egg; a handful of coal sticks, one meal! Wait, that’s quite interesting

If Shell manages to operate it successfully, it can indeed bring good economic benefits. The key issue is that few manufacturers are able to do so stably; almost none operate without problems, so it still isn’t a mature technology
There is a lot of information on Shell gasifiers available on the forum. Generally speaking, it involves a fluidized bed technology with dry feed and wet slag discharge. Its advantages include wide adaptability to different coal types and high gasification efficiency; however, it requires significant investment, and there is a lack of long-term, stable operational records in China.
