According to Article 98, Paragraph 2 of the regulatory standards, it seems that there is no requirement regarding the ambient temperature for conducting hydrostatic tests on stainless steel pressure vessels; only a requirement exists regarding the chloride ion content in the water. Additionally, Paragraph 1 does not specify any clear numerical values for the test temperature
Stainless steel does not exhibit a low-temperature ductile-to-brittle transition, so there is no need to impose such a requirement on it.
Pressure tests are conducted on the water used for austenitic stainless steel pressure vessels. Neither GB150 nor the Pressure Vessel Regulations specify the temperature of the testing medium, nor do they set clear requirements regarding its chloride ion content. GB150 and the relevant standards do not specify a particular temperature for hydraulic testing of equipment made of stainless steel. However, in the case of low-temperature vessels, according to Appendix C4.7 of GB150, the liquid temperature during hydraulic testing must be no lower than the impact test temperature of the vessel’s material and welding joints, whichever is higher, plus 20 degrees℃
The brittle (non-ductile) transition temperature of stainless steel reaches -196°C, so there is no need to impose any restrictions on the water temperature during the hydrostatic testing of pressure vessels made of stainless steel.
There are no specific regulations in the standards related to the ambient temperature during the hydrostatic testing of stainless steel pressure vessels. However, to ensure that the outer surface of the vessel remains dry during testing so that leakage can be detected, the testing temperature should not be lower than the ambient temperature; it is advisable for it to be slightly higher than the ambient temperature as well.
According to GB150: For carbon steel, 16MnR, and 15MnVR, the temperature of the liquid used for hydraulic testing must be no lower than 5 degrees Celsius; For other low-alloy steel vessels, the liquid temperature must be no lower than 15 degrees. If, due to factors such as plate thickness, the material’s temperature at which ductile transition occurs rises, the temperature of the experimental liquid must be increased accordingly. 2 For the hydraulic testing temperature of other steel containers, it shall be in accordance with the specifications in the drawings. For stainless steel equipment, if water stains cannot be completely removed after the hydraulic testing, the chloride ion content is required to be below 25 mg/l. Regarding ambient temperature, there are no mandatory requirements in the standards; however, it should be noted that when there is a large difference between the ambient temperature and that of the test liquid, the outer surface of the equipment tends to \"sweat\", making it difficult to detect leaks in the equipment.
