Natural gas: currently, under certain major policies, its use in many products is restricted or outright prohibited. Therefore, I would like to ask everyone for their opinions. Assuming there is 500 to 1 billion cubic meters per year of natural gas, with components mainly C1–C4 and C1 accounting for about 85%, what products would be promising to produce from it? Acetic acid and butanediol could be considered. **Natural gas utilization policies prohibit the production of natural gas methanol ; Restrict expansion projects of existing ammonia synthesis plants that use natural gas as a feedstock, projects to convert ammonia synthesis plants from coal to gas, as well as C1 chemical projects that use methane as a feedstock and whose primary products include acetylene, chloromethane, etc ; Projects for producing hydrogen from natural gas, which involve low gas consumption and good economic benefits, as well as projects for producing nitrogen fertilizers using natural gas that is not suitable for transmission or cannot be utilized, are permitted.
If the C1 content is around 85% and the content of compounds above C2 is around 10%, no further action is needed; direct cryogenic treatment is sufficient. C1 can be used as market gas, while C2, C3, and C4 are separated separately – C3 and C4 are used to produce liquefied gas, and compounds above C5 are used as light oils. C2 can be used as fuel gas or sold separately.
It can be used to produce olefins and liquefied natural gas, but it depends on the origin of the raw materials and their prices.
**Natural gas utilization policies prohibit the production of methanol from natural gas, but there are still areas where methanol is produced using natural gas. And the profits aren’t very substantial either! The Golmud Refinery in the Qinghai Oil Field is equipped with two natural gas production units, one with a capacity of 100,000 tons and another with a capacity of 300,000 tons! It generates considerable revenue for refineries every year!
