Why does the methanol off-gas from coking plants contain methane and hydrogen? Is it incomplete reaction?
Methane is an inert gas in the methanol synthesis system; it does not participate in the methanol synthesis reaction. It is the unconverted portion of the conversion system that is carried into the synthesis system along with the fresh gas, and hydrogen is present in excess.
