As the title suggests, is there any difference between using manual measurement and having the instrument do it automatically? Is the amount of crude oil always 100 milliliters? How is the small amount of water present in the crude oil dealt with?
Previously, we used a manual process for testing benzene, which was time-consuming and tedious – it took nearly 50 minutes per sample. The specific procedure involved using a standard distillation apparatus, and great care was taken in carrying out this process. As the amount of benzene arriving at the factory increased significantly, we now use GC to determine purity, FPD to detect sulfur content, or a sulfur analyzer for the same purpose. Water content is generally determined by visual inspection. However, when benzene was easily available, we would use Karl Fischer titration (in other words, we found excuses to refuse to accept the goods)
Generally, an automatic distillation apparatus is used, while the manual method is employed when there is a possibility of problems.
100 ml of the oil sample was used for the experiment: dry point, 10%, 30%, 50%, 70%, 90%, and end point.
We use an automatic distillation apparatus, with a capacity of usually 100 ml; if the sample contains water, it needs to be dehydrated in advance.
Oil distillation apparatus is also available in atmospheric and vacuum types; an atmospheric distillation apparatus cannot be used for determining the distillation range of lubricants.
