Yesterday, the customer requested a chip, with heat exchange tubes made of red copper (φ9×0.8), and an inner diameter of the shell of φ135mm. The customer requested that copper sheets be fitted over the copper tubes (the copper sheets also have holes drilled in them, similar to baffle plates); their function is likely to be similar to that of fins. This is what’s known as a finned heat exchanger; those copper fins are also referred to as fins, and their material is usually aluminum or copper. The thickness of these fins is generally between 0.2 and 0.6 millimeters (the exact thickness depends on the medium being used). The spacing between the fins determines the heat exchange area, so it’s necessary to consider this factor first. After that, it’s important to check whether the medium is clean; a spacing of 2 to 5 millimeters is suitable in such cases.

The fins are generally rectangular, while the shell is circular, making it relatively complicated to manufacture. I have designed one like this: chip spacing: 1.8, fin thickness: 0.2, material: 1060.
In plate-type heat exchangers, the thickness of the copper plates is now very low; common thicknesses are 0.12, 0.15, and 0.2 mm. The spacing between the plates can be determined by the user. If oil flows in the shell side, it is recommended to use a larger spacing, such as 3 mm. The spacing between the tubes is limited by the mold, so there are only a few available options; it is advisable to consult the manufacturer before designing the layout.
