GB50160 specifies that when calculating the cooling water requirements for floating roof tanks, the fire cooling water needs of adjacent tanks need not be taken into account. Is this consideration omitted in current designs? If a project includes 30,000 cubic meters of floating roof capacity and 10,000 cubic meters of dome roof capacity, then the fire cooling water requirement would be 10,000 cubic meters – isn’t that a large amount?

GB50074-2002 12.2.6 The fire-fighting water demand for oil depots shall be determined by calculating the fire-fighting water demand for the oil tank area. The fire-fighting water demand for the oil tank area should be the sum of the maximum water volume required for foam application to extinguish oil tank fires and the maximum water volume needed to cool the oil tanks. However, the fire-fighting water demand for a grade-5 oil depot shall be determined as the greater of the fire-fighting water demand for the oil tanks and the calculated fire-fighting water demand for the structures and buildings within the depot. 12.2.7 The scope of supply for fire-fighting cooling water to oil tanks shall comply with the following provisions: 1 Fixed-roof above-ground oil tanks that are on fire, as well as adjacent above-ground oil tanks within a distance of not more than 1.5D (where D is the diameter of the tank on fire), shall all be cooled. When there are more than 3 adjacent above-ground oil tanks, the cooling water volume shall be calculated based on the 3 largest adjacent oil tanks. 2. On fire floating roof and internal floating roof tanks should be cooled, while adjacent tanks need not be cooled. When the floating roof or inner floating roof of a burning oil tank has a shallow deck or buoy made of fusible material, the adjacent oil tanks should also be cooled. 3 Adjacent oil tanks located within a distance of less than 0.4D from the wall of the floating-roof or internal floating-roof oil tank on fire – where D is the diameter of the larger of the burning oil tank and the adjacent oil tank – should have their areas most affected by the radiant heat from the flames cooled down. 4 The on-fire covered oil tank and its adjacent covered oil tanks need not be cooled, but the amount of water required for protection during fire fighting (i.e., the water used for shielding personnel and cooling the ground and components surrounding the oil tanks) should be taken into account. 5 The horizontal oil tank on the burning ground should be cooled ; Adjacent cups within 1/2 of the sum of the diameter and length of the burning cup should also be cooled.
