What is the difference between PLC and DCS?
A PLC, or Programmable Logic Controller, is a new type of industrial control device based on computer technology. In the draft standard for PLCs issued by the International Electrical Committee in 1987, PLCs were defined as follows: The full English name for PLC is Programmable Logic Controller; its Chinese name is “可编程逻辑控制器”. It is defined as an electronic system capable of performing digital operations, specifically designed for use in industrial environments. It uses a type of programmable memory to store programs internally, and it carries out logical operations, sequential control, timing, counting, and arithmetic operations as well as other commands intended for users. It also controls various types of machinery or production processes through digital or analog input/output. A PLC is a programmable logic circuit; it is a language that is closely integrated with hardware, and it has important applications in the field of semiconductors. It can be said that wherever there are semiconductors, there are PLCs. A PLC is an electronic device designed specifically for digital calculations in industrial environments. It uses programmable memory to store internally instructions for performing operations such as logical operations, sequential operations, timing, counting, and arithmetic calculations, and it can control various types of machinery or production processes through digital or analog input and output. PLCs and their related peripheral devices should be designed with the principle of enabling easy integration into industrial control systems and easy expansion of their functions. DCS is the abbreviation for Distributed Control System; in China’s automation industry, it is also referred to as a distributed control system. The so-called distributed control system, or SCADA system as it is referred to in some literature, is a new type of computer-based control system as opposed to centralized control systems; it has evolved from centralized control systems. In terms of system functionality, there is little difference between DCS and centralized control systems; however, their approaches to implementing these functionalities are completely different
In simple terms, PLCs can be used for basic local control to enable a device to carry out all the tasks specified in a program, while DCS systems can perform all the functions of PLCs and also manage the operating status of all devices, valves, and pumps in an entire plant. Multiple PLCs (also known as third-party devices) can be connected to a DCS system, allowing for the monitoring and even control of their operations.
