Dear experts, I’m new to this field and have a question: A client wants to use PSA to produce hydrogen from methanol off-gases, with the feed gas containing 0.5% methanol. Will this methanol affect the adsorbents in the PSA system? Is it necessary to carry out any treatment? If so, what is the best method to use – temperature swing adsorption? Wash by water? Thank you.

I’m not quite sure. I remember that at the factory we visited, the methanol in the off-gases was absorbed by demineralized water in an off-gas scrubber; the absorbent solution was sent to the distillation unit, while the insoluble gases were sent to a flare for combustion.
I haven’t considered this issue yet, as our methane separation performance is still satisfactory; the exhaust gas can be directly sent to PSA for hydrogen extraction
We have used membrane separation to extract hydrogen from our methanol off-gases, and the yield is quite good. I have seen hydrogen production using PSA; the slight amount of methanol in the off-gas does have some effect on the adsorbent, but it’s not a problem to use it anyway. I have here the composition of the separated gases: H2 (55.93%), CO2 (4.83%), CO (7.58%), CH4 (5.87%), N2 (25.16%), H2O (0.03%), CH3OH (0.60%)
What kind of membrane does your factory use upstairs? How efficient is it?

I’m sorry; I only know that for our off-gas, hydrogen extraction is planned to be achieved through membrane separation, but the specific manufacturer has not yet been disclosed. Got it, I’ll sue you again
