The function of the weep holes is to allow the liquid material that remains on the liquid collection tray (including the liquid seal tray) after shutdown to flow out through these holes, thereby ensuring that no liquid remains on the trays. Therefore, strict requirements are placed on the levelness of the trays during installation; otherwise, residues will remain. The diameter of the weep holes is generally not less than 3 mm; the standard range is 6–12 mm, with 2.5 square centimeters of weep hole area per square meter of tray typically being used. Multiple lacrimal pores can be installed.
There are also some special cases where, when it is strictly required that the liquid in the upper layer cannot enter the material in the lower tower section, tear holes cannot be created.
All of them are probably needed, after all, the tear pores are used for allowing fluid to flow out
In my opinion, if the liquid inside the tower is quite dirty or to facilitate maintenance, it’s better to install weep holes. There are usually requirements regarding the amount of leakage, which is determined based on the tower diameter and flow rate. Weep holes are generally specified in the design specifications provided by the equipment manufacturer; if they aren’t mentioned, it means that no additional weep holes are necessary!
Lacrimal ports must be provided for maintenance purposes. The size of the hole needs to be calculated; generally, the rising gas will prevent the liquid from flowing downward.
