During the production process in accordance with GB150-98, for containers such as liquefied petroleum gas storage tanks and liquid ammonia storage tanks that require post-weld heat treatment, a welding test plate is prepared; this test plate is then heat-treated together with the container in order to evaluate the performance of the welded joints. The supervision and inspection agency stationed at our factory believes that such containers should have two welding test plates made: one for testing the welding process parameters after welding, and the other to be heat-treated along with the container. How exactly should product welding test plates be prepared in this situation?
Of course, we have to follow the opinions of the testing agency; it goes without saying.
Not all personnel in testing institutions are experts; actions should be taken in accordance with standards and regulations, rather than depending on what any individual says. If the equipment requires heat treatment, just bring a test plate, and heat treatment can be carried out in the same furnace. It’s just that our country’s trial plate system is far too impractical, wasting human, material, and financial resources.
I believe the argument put forward by the inspection departments is unscientific. Product welding test plates are used to assess the quality of welding, but if heat treatment is required, it is meaningless to check the quality of the welds before such treatment is carried out; moreover, this does not guarantee that the welds will be of acceptable quality after heat treatment. If only one test plate is used, by the time the entire product undergoes heat treatment, almost all the welds have already been completed, and in such a case the test plate fails to serve its purpose – it’s like trying to cook rice that’s already cooked. The inspection departments’ suggestion to use two test plates is likely a last resort. This issue has always been controversial; the new version of the regulatory standards considers eliminating the need for product welding test plates, precisely because they not only fail to serve the purpose of assessing welding quality but also represent an additional burden for companies. It’s unlikely that many companies are able to conduct mechanical property tests on these test plates in a timely manner before ring-weld assembly, and even if they do, how many of them receive unsatisfactory results? All of them are up to standard; therefore, it is recommended that the original poster follow the advice of the inspection department and produce two test panels
