I’m not aware of the conventions regarding unit symbols in our company, but letter symbols for things like towers, containers, compressors, reactors, etc., are quite inconsistent. For example, when I first started working at the plant, the symbol for the tower was T101; it has now been changed to C101. The container V101 has been changed to D101, and the compressor has been changed from C101 to K101, and so on
