Question: In the wastewater treatment of purified terephthalic acid (PTA), what are the main substances present in the sediment in the sedimentation tank? I’ve seen some information suggesting that cobalt and manganese should be removed first, and then biochemical methods should be used. It’s best to use MBR
There’s not much to say about the sediment in the sedimentation tank during wastewater treatment – it’s obviously activated sludge. Because nowadays, PTA wastewater is treated using biological methods (anaerobic + aerobic processes). The sedimentation tank you are referring to is likely the primary sedimentation tank used before treatment; over 99% of the solids in this tank consist of the product TA. Of course, there are also by-products such as 4-CBA and PT acid, along with small amounts of catalysts like cobalt and manganese. As for the method of transporting the precipitates, since we consider these materials to be waste, their price is still fairly good. It’s not entirely clear what they are used for, but it is said that they are used in coatings, unsaturated polyester resins, antioxidants, and plasticizers. So generally, it is dug out every once in a while, then dried and packed up for sale.
