I made a silly mistake today; it took me a lot of effort to fix it. Some people might have been doing this work for years without running into such a problem. I’m sharing this so that everyone won’t make the same mistake as me in the future. Today, we used lifting equipment; a 5-ton sling was employed, with the equipment attached to both ends of the sling. Since the sling was quite wide, it didn’t fit completely inside the hook. After lifting began, the hook tilted within its own plane due to excessive stress on its tip, and the hinge point of the hook caught the chain of the winch, preventing the load from being lowered. Moreover, the hook tip became deeply embedded in the sling. With the equipment weighing 3 tons and hanging in the air, there was no suitable spot to attach steel cables. It took a long time – we tried numerous steel cables, a winch, and a ladder – before we were able to resolve the issue through another attempt at lifting. The whole process took 2 hours. In fact, simply inserting the strap entirely into the retaining sleeve of the hook will prevent such basic mistakes from occurring. Let’s encourage each other! I see that the original poster’s specialty is chemical and mechanical maintenance, not professional crane operation, right? If you are not a professional crane operator, then you are likely operating in violation of regulations. All workers here must have a crane operation certificate in order to operate cranes and carry out lifting tasks; otherwise, it is considered a violation of regulations.
It’s obviously illegal to operate in that way. The chain isn’t in its proper place
Before lifting, it is necessary to indicate which parts of the lifting equipment must not be touched and what precautions need to be taken; the rest can then be handled by the lifting equipment. :)
Hehe, here we generally don’t need crane operators for small lifting tasks, as there are very few crane operators in the entire company; such operations as lifting the upper casing of steam turbines or heavy turbine rotors are the ones that require crane operators. In response to the moderator’s question, it’s not a problem with the chain, but rather with the hook; the hook is tilted, which causes it to press on the main lifting chain (with a capacity of 5 tons, supported by two chains) at the point where it bends a short distance above the hook.

It’s normal; during routine maintenance, one doesn’t encounter such things. Experience is gained in this way, and talent is developed in this manner. But it’s important to be thorough despite the roughness of the work – after all, it’s one’s own body at stake, and there’s also the matter of earning money.
Safety must come first; the principle of not carrying out any maintenance work unless it is safe must be adhered to. It’s fortunate that no accidents occur despite mistakes – by learning from them, such incidents can be prevented in the future. Those who are not professional lift operators generally should not engage in lifting operations. If such work is to be carried out, special operation certificates must be obtained, and work must be done with those certificates; professional training is also necessary. Every step of the operation must be carefully verified, and a lifting plan must be developed to ensure that everything is done safely!

I would like to ask: if the lifting equipment is about 24 meters in height and length and needs to be placed inside a frame, how much length of lifting space is required? Additional note: It is an outdoor frame, and the total height of the equipment to be installed is approximately 24 meters. A lifting area needs to be reserved starting from the outer edge of the frame; how many meters of lifting area should be left outside the frame? If you are not a professional crane operator or do not possess a crane operation certificate, it is best not to take on crane-related tasks. If nothing goes wrong, the supervisors won’t say that you are capable of doing this job; but once important parts are damaged and the maintenance schedule is delayed, the supervisors won’t blame a lack of crane operators – they will instead say that you violated safety procedures. When I first started working, there was a shortage of crane operators on site; I even lifted turbine casings by myself. Thinking about it now, it’s scary – if anything had gone wrong back then, I likely would have lost my job. Do your own job well and take care of yourself.
Is this device supposed to be stood up? The conditions for the problem are too brief! Horizontal lifting or vertical lifting? What is the lifting height? How much does the lifting equipment weigh? These parameters are all the key conditions for the lifting plan!
Now, chemical plant maintenance workers can obtain slinging certificates (there are no lifting operation certificates available at present); routine maintenance tasks (using manual hoists) can be carried out by such workers, while the lifting of large items requires professionals to develop a specialized lifting plan.
People grow by making mistakes over and over again; I believe you won’t make the same mistakes again in the future
It seems that the lifting requirements were violated; there are ten situations in which lifting is not allowed, and your case falls under one of those situations, so it’s not acceptable
