We want to recycle the paraffin oil (mineral oil) used in our company, as well as the emulsified oil waste resulting from the mixing of water and small amounts of colored impurities, by separating the oil from the water. Do any experts have any good methods for this? At present, we add a certain amount of activated carbon to the emulsified oil and then use plate and frame filtration; however, this method has a major drawback: the filtration speed is slow, the plate and frame filter cloths are difficult to clean, and a large amount of oil is wasted in the filtered residue! Oil-water separation methods can be roughly divided into physical methods, physicochemical methods, chemical demulsification methods, biochemical methods, and electrochemical methods. I used to work in the pesticide industry. The usual approach to deal with such situations is to increase the difference in density between the two liquids; if oil is on top, sodium chloride is added to the water layer or a solvent is added to the oil layer. If water is on top, large amounts of clean water are added. In short, the goal is to widen the density difference between the two. If emulsification occurs, add a demulsifier. Sometimes a simple increase in temperature can solve the problem.
Thank you for the response from the fourth floor, but our emulsified oil is made up of an alkaline solution and mineral oil; the density of the alkaline solution is 1.23, while that of the mineral oil is around 0.85. The difference between these two densities is quite significant, yet the mixture still doesn’t separate properly!

There are still some methods for demulsification; simpler ones include adding solvents, raising the temperature, or stirring. You can try these methods to see which one works best: lol

Methods for separating heterogeneous systems 1. Sedimentation – Utilizes the density difference between the dispersed phase and the continuous phase to cause relative movement under the influence of gravity, thereby achieving separation. 1. For sand particles or clay in water with a diameter of 5–10 μm: gravity sedimentation, centrifugal sedimentation, electric fields, magnetic fields, flocculation sedimentation (by adding a small amount of alum to turbid water).
2. Filtration separation – for particles with a diameter of 4–10 μm.
3. Ion exchange separation – e.g., removing Ca2+ and Mg2+ from water.
4. Membrane separation – e.g., desalination of seawater, treatment of papermaking wastewater
