What are the advantages of high-performance reinforced fiber composites? Friends who are interested in learning about this topic could please answer. Thank you! !
Reinforcement materials are generally fibers: carbon fiber, glass fiber, boron fiber, basalt fiber, alumina fiber, silicon carbide fiber, etc; Matrix materials generally include resin matrices, metal matrices, ceramic matrices, etc. Advantages: they feature high strength and modulus, as well as low weight; they can replace metal materials. The newly built Yangtze River Bridge in Wuhan uses basalt-reinforced composite rebar. The Boeing 787 also uses carbon fiber composites in place of traditional aluminum-magnesium alloys, which reduces the aircraft’s weight and further enhances its load-carrying capacity. There are many more cylinders, which also use glass fiber reinforced materials. There are also disadvantages, which mainly depend on the matrix’s resistance to aging, corrosion, and ultraviolet light. However, these can also be improved by changing the resin formula. High strength, high modulus, lightweight material
Taking carbon fiber as an example: 1. The material is lightweight yet highly strong – its tensile strength ranges from 3200 to 4000 MPa, which is more than 10 times that of steel with the same cross-section. Its density is between 2.0 and 3.0 g/cm3, and the thickness of a single layer is between 0.112 and 0.167 mm. When bonded to a structure using adhesives, it forms a single unit with a thickness of around 2 mm only. No pre-processing is required, making construction convenient; no pressure or lifting equipment is needed. Moreover, it offers significant advantages in terms of increasing the static and dynamic loads that a component can withstand, as well as enhancing the component’s stiffness, creep resistance, and durability. 2. High durability: It does not rust, making it highly suitable for use in environments with high acidity, alkalinity, salt concentrations, and atmospheric corrosion. It also boasts high fatigue resistance, wear resistance, and anti-aging properties.
Of course, the strength has been significantly increased – carbon fibers, boron fibers, and so on are much lighter in weight compared to metals
Fiber-reinforced composite materials play an increasingly important role in the efficient utilization of pollution-free, renewable energy sources, as well as in energy conservation and consumption reduction. The uniqueness of composite materials lies in their ability to provide properties that are difficult to achieve with single materials. Their greatest advantage is that they offer design flexibility, enabling the optimization of products tailored to specific technical requirements; this helps to ensure maximum reliability, reduce weight, and lower production costs.
