Why does the adsorbent need to be passivated before use?
The adsorbent needs to be passivated before use; it depends on what kind of adsorbent it is There are those that can be reduced; I have not encountered any that are passivated yet. Copper adsorbents used for the pressure swing adsorption production of carbon monoxide, such as PU-1 from Peking University, need to be subjected to heating and reduction before use in order to convert Cu2+ into Cu+ ; What adsorbent are you using?
I’ve only heard of activating the adsorbent before use; I’ve never heard of passivating it. :o
Molecular sieve adsorbents seem to need to be activated; ordinary adsorbents also require activation through their reducibility, while physical adsorption seems to require passivation!
I’ve never heard of passivation; it’s just that some adsorbents need to be reduced before use, as their adsorption activity is very low if they are not reduced. Some adsorbents (such as those used for decarburization and hydrogen production) do not require any treatment before use to meet the required standards; however, some experienced manufacturers opt to treat them beforehand in order to maximize the adsorption capacity of these adsorbents. I’m not sure if what the original poster meant by “passivation” is this

I’ve never heard of passivation; I only know that some adsorbents, after being used for a long time and becoming contaminated or poisoned, need to be reactivated in order to regain their reducing activity
Some adsorbents need to be reduced before use; without reduction, their adsorption activity is very low. For example, molecular sieve adsorbents need to be activated, and ordinary adsorbents also require their reducibility to be restored in order to regain selective adsorption capabilities. Some forms of physical adsorption need to be passivated; it depends on the type of adsorbent used, so it’s best to consult specific technical information.
