Comparison between single-screw and twin-screw compressors: I. In terms of force balance, in single-screw compressors, the radial and axial gas forces acting on the screw can be automatically balanced; the star wheel teeth are subjected to gas forces, which requires them to have sufficient strength and stiffness. Double-screw compressors: The screw rotors are subjected to significant radial and axial gas forces, requiring the screws to have sufficient strength and stiffness. II. In terms of manufacturing cost, for single-screw compressors: ordinary bearings can be used for the screw and star wheel bearings, resulting in lower manufacturing costs. Twin-screw compressors: Due to the high load on the two screw rotors, bearings with high precision are required, which results in higher manufacturing costs. III. Reliability: Single-screw compressors – The star wheel in a single-screw compressor is a vulnerable component; in addition to requiring high-quality materials, it also needs to be replaced regularly. Double-screw compressor: There are no vulnerable components in a double-screw compressor, and its fault-free operating time can reach 40,000 to 80,000 hours. IV. Efficiency: In their new condition, single-screw compressors and twin-screw compressors have roughly the same efficiency. As operating time increases, the wear of the star wheel in single-screw compressors leads to a reduction in gas flow rate and lower efficiency. V. Noise and vibration: The noise and vibration levels of single-screw compressors and twin-screw compressors are essentially the same. VI. In terms of processing equipment: For single-screw compressors, there is no mature specialized processing equipment, which results in the performance of the products not being very stable. Double-screw compressors: There are mature milling and grinding machines dedicated to screws, which ensure stable product performance. VII. Operation and Maintenance: The daily operation and maintenance of single-screw compressors and twin-screw compressors are essentially the same. VIII. In terms of applicability: Single-screw compressors are suitable for applications requiring high exhaust pressures, such as high-pressure air compressors, refrigeration compressors, and natural gas compressors. Double-screw compressors: Due to limitations such as rotor stiffness and bearing loads, double-screw compressors are only suitable for medium and low pressure applications, such as air compressors for power generation, refrigeration compressors, and low-pressure natural gas compressors; their discharge pressure generally cannot exceed 4.5 MPa.
