Since the lifespan of MTBE catalysts is generally between six months and one and a half years, and because they contain harmful substances such as methanol and MTBE, environmental and safety considerations require that these catalysts be treated before being removed. Let’s discuss what the best approach might be. In my previous facility, we used water washing followed by direct discharge, but this resulted in a large amount of wastewater that could not be processed, and direct emission of exhaust gases caused environmental pollution. Currently, we employ methanol recovery to reduce the COD level of the discharged water, while the exhaust gases are sent directly to flares for combustion. Are there any better methods? The material to be removed must be cleaned thoroughly. After removal, it should be purged with nitrogen, and this process needs to be done thoroughly; afterward, it should be purged with air. In this way, substances such as methanol and MTBE are carried away by the wind, reducing contamination significantly through washing

After the units in our company come to a stop, nitrogen is first used to displace combustible gases and send them to the flare, followed by the use of steam to purge the catalyst. Once the temperature of the entire catalyst bed reaches over 90 degrees (which takes about 1 hour, starting with the low-pressure gas system), purging with air is then initiated. This way, the flavor is mild.
