What procedures should be followed for working with fire inside the compressor cylinder?
Displacement, isolation (including of media such as liquids, electricity, steam, gases, etc.), to ensure the absence of explosive gases and prevent explosions; At the same time, pay attention to maintaining an aerobic atmosphere to prevent any adverse effects on people.
1. Effective isolation to ensure steam is completely cut off. 2. Cool down to avoid burns. 3. Use displacement ventilation to remove flammable materials in the vicinity. 4. Obtain a hot work permit.
For the middle-stage cylinders, it is possible to remove the air valves at the front-stage outlet and rear-stage inlet cylinders to enable natural gas exchange; if welding is to be carried out immediately, nitrogen can be used for gas replacement, and welding may proceed only after the analysis shows satisfactory results. If it is a single cylinder to be removed, the inlet and outlet valves of that cylinder as well as the inlet valve of the second stage should be opened simultaneously; then the inlet pipeline should be used for backwashing in order to perform natural or nitrogen purging. Work can proceed only after the analysis shows that the conditions are satisfactory.
I’m not sure what kind of compressor cylinder the LZ is referring to. In general, the medium inside a cylinder is steam; usually, by closing the inlet and outlet valves to prevent steam from entering, it’s possible to carry out welding work. In the case of compressor cylinders, it is also necessary to check whether the medium is a flammable or explosive gas; if so, strict procedures must be followed – isolation, purging, and analysis – before work can proceed. When working on the compressor cylinders, it is possible to first displace the air with nitrogen, then run the ventilator to blow air through the area. Of course, sampling and analysis are necessary, and asbestos sheets should be used to isolate each valve in order to prevent dirt such as welding slag from falling in. Then one can get angry.
The pipes connected to the cylinder are isolated with blocking plates, purged and replaced; work on them can only proceed after sampling analysis shows satisfactory results.
When working with open flames in a cylinder, it is necessary to replace not only that section of the cylinder itself, but also the pipes or equipment connected to its inlet and outlet. Covering gas valves with asbestos boards does not provide complete isolation, and it may lead to the ignition of gases inside the connected pipes. The oil residue on the packing inside the cylinder must be cleaned away to prevent fires.
Before performing hot work, it is necessary to install a blind flange to effectively isolate the system; it is absolutely not sufficient to simply close the valves – this procedure must not be skipped! Then, the relevant pipes and cylinders are replaced using water filling; once the analysis shows they are satisfactory, a fire permit must be obtained before work can begin!

It must be completely isolated; after the replacement is completed, ventilation is necessary, and it’s obvious that relevant work permits must be obtained. During welding operations, ventilation must also be maintained.
