Are the shaft sleeve and the bearing shell the same thing? I’ve seen in some materials that the shaft sleeve is essentially a bearing shell in the form of a complete cylinder
Of course, it’s not the same thing. The bushings are all cylindrical in shape, while the bearing shells are several pieces that are combined together and used as one unit
A few additional points: The shaft sleeve generally has no fitting relationship with the shaft; it just needs to be larger than the shaft, and it is a separate sleeve; Bearing shells generally have a precise fit with the shaft; their functions include bearing load, reducing friction, and providing lubrication. There are usually two or more of them, but single units also exist.

A bushing is something that fits over the shaft to serve a fixing purpose. The bearing shell contains lubrication channels that enable the lubrication and cooling of the shaft and the bearing sleeve.
The shaft sleeve is installed on the shaft to protect it; the bearing shell, also known as a sliding bearing, is used to support the shaft. During operation, lubricating oil enters the space between the shaft and the bearing shell, and once the shaft starts rotating, the hydrodynamic pressure effect lifts the shaft. Therefore, during rotation, the shaft does not come into direct contact with the bearing shell.
A typical bearing shell is composed of five small pieces that can form a ring, whose inner surface is coated with babbitt. It mainly prevents the bearing from overheating and deforming.
