In what situations are cathodic and anodic protection of storage tanks used respectively? Large crude oil storage tanks are equipped with anodic protection; I would appreciate some guidance from those with experience.
It should be clear whether the concept refers to cathodic protection or sacrificial anode protection; these methods are generally used in large storage tanks and long-distance pipelines.
Cathodic protection for storage tanks is employed in situations where the soil at the site of tank construction is highly corrosive. For large crude oil storage tanks, the inner side of the tank bottom plate is protected using a combination of coating and aluminum-magnesium sacrificial anodes, while the outer side of the tank bottom plate is protected by a coating in conjunction with external current cathodic protection.
Additional note: Where feasible, (newly built) long-distance pipelines can be equipped with a cathodic protection system using external current； If the conditions are not met, a cathodic protection system with sacrificial anodes can be installed.
